Gin Making Masterclass at Colwith Farm Distillery
You know the saying, ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade’? Well, for the family at Colwith Farm, When life gave them potatoes, they made vodka! Based in Lanlivery, the family owned farm which has been running for generations, has been supplying far and wide with potatoes. When the current generation looked at the bigger picture and thought ‘what more could we do?’, the idea of creating vodka from the potatoes was born. Today, they’re an award winning distillery, Cornwall’s first plough to bottle spirit maker and a brilliant location for hosting master classing in making your own spirits to take home and enjoy!
I recently had the pleasure of visiting to partake in their gin masterclass. We headed to the farm and the moment we walked through the doors of the distillery, it became very exciting! The whole space is beautifully finished and decorated, making spending the afternoon here a real joy. You can visit the distillery to tour their process and sample their spirits and if desired, you can stay on to do the masterclass where you can make your own vodka or gin.
After settling in and enjoying a delightful welcome drink, the wonderful ladies began showing us around the distillery and explaining the process of creating their spirits. It was apparent that the team here at Colwith take no shortcuts; in several aspects they use the most sustainable and environmentally friendly route instead of the shortest or cheapest, which is brilliant to hear. With all waste going back onto the fields, rain water preservation and plastic free packaging; everything is well thought out.
Tour complete and feeling newly educated on the process, it was time to sample some of the good stuff! We were taken through a selection of their best selling vodka and gin flavours, with brilliant explanation throughout on why and how these flavours came about. As with everything that occurs at Colwith, the flavours are not synthetic and come from natural botanicals, herbs and fruits.
Now it really was time to put all that knowledge to good use! Having sampled as many flavours as we could, it was time to decide what we wanted our own gin to look like. Provided with all the tools necessary, we began by choosing which flavours we wanted and then gathered them from around the room.
Once all our chosen flavours were picked and weighed, we put everything together in the adorable little stills and let science do its magic! Not long after, the gin had made its way into our beaker ready to pour and our homemade gin was created. Bottled, labelled and ready to enjoy at home.
This whole experience was amazing; whether you’re a big gin or vodka fan, or not, there’s still so much to enjoy in this. From picking the flavours that go together and the creativity of bottling and labelling it yourself, there’s something in it for everyone.
