Jubilee Pool; UK’s Largest Art Deco Lido in Penzance, Cornwall
Have you ever seen images of the triangular swimming pool in Penzance? Thought what in the Wes Anderson is that? Well, it’s Jubilee Pool, the UK’s largest Art Deco lido and first of it’s kind, geothermal heated pool. The pool has been operating since the 1930’s to allow locals to swim in the cold saltwater. In 2020, the geothermal section opened, operated by a 410 metre geothermal well, keeping the pool at a steamy temperature of around 35 degrees.
The triangle is broken into three sections. The largest is a cold sea water pool which is generally around 1-2 degrees warmer than the sea. One small corner section is for little ones and the other corner is the geothermal pool. A ticket can be purchased to access a half day in the main pool or grab a ticket to the geothermal pool which gives you 55 minutes of toasty swimming.
The pool has WC and shower facilities as well as plenty of changing spaces. There’s no lockers at the pool so you will need to pop your stuff poolside so best to take just what you need. There’s lifeguards on duty to keep you all safe too!
If you keep an eye on their calendar, the pool hosts several fun experiences including inflatable games, a dog day where your furry friends can dip their feet in, evening sessions and even movie nights! It’s such a unique and fun experience that you cannot miss it when staying in the area, or for any locals who are yet to visit.
The pool also has a wonderful cafe which you can visit whether going in the pool or not. They serve delicious breakfast and lunch with a fresh and seasonal menu. It’s a perfect way to warm up post swim with a hot drink and piece of cake. Top tip, the floor in the cafe is heated so pop your shoes off and warm up your toes!
The lido brings so much to the local area and something they can be so proud of. Whether you’re willing to dare the cold pool or just want to relax in the heated part, it’s a brilliant activity and a great way to get friends together.
