Standing Proud On The Cliff; Polurrian On The Lizard Hotel
One thing I never thought I’d say is; if it’s good enough for Marconi, Churchill and Clark Gable, it’s good enough for me! What on earth am I talking about? Well, let me introduce you to Polurrian Hotel, this magnificent hotel perched proudly on the cliff above Polurrian Cove was once visited by the aforementioned notable people. The hotel has a lot of history, as does a lot on this stretch of coastline, but after a devastating fire in the 1900’s not much was left. Fast forward to today and the hotel is currently undergoing a transformation and is looking more magical than ever!
Nowhere defines that audible ‘wow’ as you turn into the driveway quite like this place. Travelling through the winding lanes of the Lizard Peninsula, you’ll eventually hit a dead end but one you’ll never want to leave. The hotel is very commanding on the landscape yet perfectly placed to offer a beautiful point of interest in the grounds. We were heading down to spend a night to embrace the sunsets and storm-chasing benefits of a winter break in this dramatic spot.
Entering through a stunning set of large doors, the warm and inviting decor inside hits you instantly. The festive additions help with the cosines, of course, but the textures and the light bouncing around is wonderful.
First things first, we needed to check out our bedroom. We were staying in their deluxe Seaview rooms and I can safely say, deluxe? check! Seaview? check check check! The rooms give faultless views across the ocean, an ocean which can be full of life at this time of year from dolphins, seals and the odd sighting of a whale. The interior design offers a Scandinavian simplicity with warm inviting colours, I love the warmer tones where you often find blues by the sea, a pleasant change. The room comes complete with everything you could require including beautiful Elemis toiletries.
We rushed down here to ensure we could capture the hotel during golden hour, so bags dropped off and a quick dash back outside to explore the gardens and all the corners of the property. One thing you have to do is to find the famous bent tree in the garden, perfectly framing the hotel and a signature feature which has made its way onto their logo. Polurrian Cove is directly below the hotel, so accessible within minutes. You can take the steps or the slope, dependant on your preference and dogs are welcome during the off season.
The hotel has a lot of space to offer meaning many hidden rooms and private spaces to settle into. Every corner has been thoughtfully designed and places, offering maximum comfort. With books, record player, a pool table and many more things to keep you occupied – if you can pull your eyes away from the view that is!
For all hotel guests, you have access to the health suite. The suite offers a gym, pool and hot tub which optional paid for spa treatments to round off a perfect stay. Once the sun had set, we popped to the pool for a dip before dinner. The pool is kept to two parties maximum, meaning it’s always nice a quiet and relaxing which we loved.
The hotel offers an all day menu including classics and a wood fired pizza menu. We took a seat in the beautiful dining area because I was obsessed with the decor but you can eat in the main dining space for a more casual meal. The food was great, highly recommend the pizza. We followed with dessert and cocktails, both amazing but the best part was the service. Our waiter was fantastic and really lifted the whole experience!
After a beautiful sleep and waking up to the ocean, it was time for some more food and we headed downstairs for breakfast. The breakfast offers a buffet with pastries, fruit and toast whilst you wait for your cooked course. I opted for the waffles with berries and cinnamon sugar – yum!
At Polurrian, you can park up upon arrival and have no need to touch your car again until you leave. The hotel is based right on the South West Coast Path and perfectly between Poldhu cove and Mullion. Mullion is a stunning cove with a lot of history and charm, Poldhu is a lovely beach with a cafe which offers amazing hot chocolates. You can continue your walk further afield, explore the Lizard, Church Cove, Cadgwith and more all within a short distance.
The photos make it pretty clear but if it wasn’t, we had an amazing time at Polurrian. A masterpiece of a hotel with intricate and unique decor throughout. A very comfortable stay and all the amenities you could require. In the summer, this spot would be unbeatable, with their outdoor pool and the beach to explore. In the Winter however, as we experienced, it is equally as magical. With the perfect sunset view, short local walks, indoor pool and cosy nooks to enjoy. Thank you Polurrian and I highly recommend a stay!
